"Putting the Pieces in Place"
The Reality of Child Abuse
The problem of child abuse is a pervasive one, that touches countless families.
Experts estimate that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are sexually abused before the
age of 18. This means that in the average 8th grade classroom with 30 students,
there are 4 girls and 2 boys who have been abused and also 1 child who has
abused a younger or more vulnerable child. Over 180 reports of child sexual
abuse were made in Fairfield County in 2009, and it is estimated that 88% of child
sexual abuse is never reported.
The goal of the Child Advocacy Center of Fairfield County is for children and
families to live in a safe and nurturing community, free from sexual and physical
abuse, and to ensure justice and healing for Fairfield County children subjected to
sexual and severe physical abuse by rendering child-friendly, victim-sensitive,
family-centered services through a multidisciplinary team.
You Can Help
Everyone in our community has a role to play in protecting children and preventing
child abuse.
You know that funny feeling you get when something just doesn’t seem right,
when a situation is uncomfortable. It is important to follow your instincts, speak
up, and secure the assistance a child needs to be safe. Help is available for
children who have been abused and for their families.
If you are uncertain about when to call, or what to do, the CAC of Fairfield County
can help. We can provide informational trainings for your PTO, community
organization, neighborhood association or place or worship. You and your
organization can become partners in prevention.
If you would like more information, to schedule a program or to become a
volunteer, please call the number on the Contact Us page.
